How to build a firm foundation for an Internet business

Webpreneur Paul building a firm business foundation

Foundations can collapse at a moments notice.

Hi guys and welcome to post # 2 from Webpreneur Paul, or Clancy, as my friends like to call me.

If you recall from my first post I said I would dive right in to tell you about my journey to success.  And.  I also mentioned this article would be about building a firm foundation for that business.

The best thing I can give you right now is the information I wish I had before I started my journey as it would have shortened the whole process up.  Now this information is not a magic bullet, but it will be close to a full metal jacket which cuts through just about anything.

As I previously mentioned there are any number of people out there who’ll offer you all sorts of programs and happily max out your credit card.  But before you get too excited and head off to the bank to increase your credit card limit from $5,000 to $20,000 to buy the next best thing to make you money online…

Might I suggest you make a cup of tea and read the rest of this blog post.  Why?  ‘Cause it’ll save you a bucket load of time, a truck load of money and a semi trailer load of confusion and frustration’.  At this point you may or may not have heard of certain people and or their programs or systems to help you where you want to go online.

Now this next bit is going to come as a bit of a shock to you.  But you’re actually going to have to do a little bit of home work in the form of research.

Bet you’re going to ask next, “what am I going to research?”

And just to make your homework a little more unpalatable, you’re going to have to sit there and do the research on yourself.  Now if you can get this bit right without taking any short cuts, at the end of it, you’ll be rushing to the bathroom mirror and wonder who’s staring back at you.  You might just get a shock to see whose looking back.

The thing is guys.  If you can’t do research and be honest with yourself, how do you reckon you’re going to go entrusting your hard earned dollars to others.   Just on a promise you’re going to make money online.  Well, you wouldn’t without doing proper research.  Would you?

Before you get ahead of the game.

Here’s what I want you to do.  This will pay big time dividends in your life way beyond this blog post.  And here are the key questions I want you to ask yourself,  write the answers down and keep them somewhere safe so you can refer to them later:

  • Who am I really?
  • What am I currently doing?
  • Am I happy personally?
  • Am I happy financially?
  • Is what I’m currently doing personally and financially working for me?

But here’s the thing.

If the answer to the above question is currently NO then ask yourself, “What am I prepared to do about it?”

If the answer to the above questions is yes, then you’ve got it sorted.  You’ve got it made, seriously, do not read any further!

Now in my experience most people tend to fudge the answer to these questions and they’re somewhere between a yes and a no.  This is because people really don’t know where they want to be at.  So the next set of questions I want you to ask yourself is going to be a little more specific.

  1. What do you want to be doing in the future?
  2. What $ figure would do it for you per month doing what you want to do in the future?
  3. How long do you want to take to get there?
  4. Will that make you happy when you get there?

OK … let’s analyze both sets of questions.

The first set of questions should have opened your eyes to who you really are, where you’re at and if you like what you see.  The second set of questions, if you’ve answered everything honestly, should tell you that you’re nowhere near what your full potential is in most cases.

So … what you need to then do is answer this last question by way of making a statement.  And I promise this will be the last section of research on yourself for now.  What you need to do is to make a statement based on the above questions you have answered.  And that will be your set goal.

Pretty cool huh!

You’ve just learned something about yourself you never realized.  Once you’ve come to that conclusion and you’ve set your goal of what you want to be, where you want to be, in what time frame and what dollar figure.  You now have a basic road map for your life from here on.

So why do you need a road map if you’re not on a road?

‘Cause if we want to travel on a road we need a vehicle’.  This brings me to the next bit of research you need to do.  You need to research vehicles!  No not a Ferrari or a Lamborghini at this point … although those might come.  What you need to do is research business vehicles.

Now if you want to achieve your goals particularly financial ones you will need to chose two things.  Just like buying a car.  You’ll need the best vehicle suited to the purpose x the resources you already have.

Assuming like most people your resources are finite you need to be smart about your research.  Don’t jump into a program with all credit cards blazing.  Even though it may look like you are taking the long way round.  This is how I started my journey and I think you should consider doing the same.

I didn’t look at any glossy brochures or DVDs or books.  I jumped on my computer and typed in several phrases like, “how to make money online.”  And up will come 10 to 20 pages of just about anybody or everybody on how to make money online.

It’s a veritable gold mine of free research.  Take a few days and do some research on various people on how to make money online and take plenty of notes.

Now I know what you’re going to say, “I already knew that!”

Well that’s true … but here’s the difference.  You now have a better understanding of yourself.  You now know where you eventually want to be and what $ figure you’re going to be happy with when you get there.

And you don’t think that’s going to make a difference when you get there?

So … how do you choose?

Let’s say for instance you have four options to choose from.

What do I do now? You’re probably thinking.

Now this is the bit that will save you the time and the money.  Each of those options if you’ve done your research properly will give you something for free to get you onto their list.  And if its not free it will be at a very low cost.

What you now need to do is at your leisure take up these four options making sure they’re not back to back and evaluate each one in turn.  Now in almost every case you’ll eventually get invited to a live event.  Whether it be on the Internet or live in person at a venue.

Now guys here are where the golden nuggets are found.  When you attend these events, take lots of notes and take notice of the prominent people in the room.  Have a chat to them in private.  In some cases they will be clients of the people presenting.  And if that’s the case you can ask some key questions about the program.

Based on the answers you get from these people x the information the presenters give you about their program x the number of events you attend x your goals and financial needs.  This will give you a fair indication of if any of these options are suitable for you to consider.

Let’s say it doesn’t work for you with the first four options you might want to consider adding one or two more to your list and repeat the whole exercise.  Having said all of the above we did talk about starting at the bottom of the ladder.  By doing all of what I’ve suggested above you have now made a very firm foundation to place your ladder onto before you step up.

Yours in future profits
